Yi Mei Ren — Spring 2025

Picked in March from high-elevation gardens on Wu Liang Mountain in Yunnan, Yi Mei Ren is a red tea with an unusual oolong-like depth. The leaves undergo a longer withering process with gentle shaking during processing, creating a tea that is smooth and rounded, while retaining a more aromatic and structured character than a typical red tea.

The first steeps open with cocoa, dried cherry, and a soft orchid fragrance. As the leaves develop, darker notes of malt, cedar, and dried fig begin to emerge, bringing warmth and depth to the cup. The liquor is full-bodied and smooth, with a gentle dryness and a soft leathery character that lingers into the finish.

Rich without becoming heavy, Yi Mei Ren sits somewhere between the comforting depth of a Yunnan red tea and the more aromatic, evolving character of an oolong. It holds its structure particularly well across multiple infusions, becoming softer and sweeter as the session develops.

Tastes like
Cocoa, dried cherry, orchid (Top);
Malt, cedar, dried fig (Base);

Brewing
5g tea / 100ml water / 90–95°C
Steep for 30–45 sec. Re-steep several times. Shorter steeps emphasise the fruit and floral character, while longer infusions bring out more malt, wood, and body.

In the cup
Yi Mei Ren is warming and full-bodied, but with enough fragrance and structure to keep it feeling bright. The flavour develops gradually across multiple steeps, moving from fruit and florals towards deeper malt, wood, and dried fruit.

A good choice when you want the richness of a red tea with a little more complexity and movement in the cup.

How to brew
Gongfu Style 5g : 100ml

Our favourite way to brew tea. Use a gaiwan or small teapot and steep the leaves for around 30-45 seconds. Re-steep several times, adjusting the time as you go. Each infusion will bring out something slightly different from the leaves.

Western Style 1g : 100ml

For a larger pot or a single longer brew, use around 1g of tea per 100ml of water. Steep for 3-5 minutes, then strain. Increase the leaf or brewing time if you prefer a stronger cup.

Grandpa Style 1g : 100ml

The simplest way to brew. Add the leaves directly to your mug, fill with hot water and start drinking once the leaves have opened and begun to settle. When you're around two-thirds of the way through, top up with more hot water and keep going.
